How to setup connection on Windows Phone 8.1 / Windows Mobile 10

So, you have bought ELM327 adapter, downloaded Car Scanner Pro or Car Scanner.
Your next step would be connection setup between your Windows Phone 8.1 / Windows Mobile 10 smartphone and ELM327 adapter. Car Scanner supports 2 types of adapters:

  • ELM327 with Bluetooth
  • ELM327 with Wi-Fi

Connecting to Bluetooth ELM327 adapter.

Connection setup contains two steps: first of all you setup link between your smartphone and adapter in Windows settings, then you choose connection settings in Car Scanner Pro or Car Scanner settings.

First step – Windows settings.

  1. Plug in ELM327 adapter to your car diagnostic port and turn on ignition. If your adapter have ON/OFF switch, don’t forget ot turn it on.
  2. Open your phone “Settings“. Please, note, you need to use your phone (operating system) settings, not Car Scanner settings.
  3. Open Bluetooth and turn on Bluetooth on your phone. 
  4. Wait until your phone would find ELM327 Bluetooth adapter. Sometimes it can take up to several minutes.  Usually adapter is named “OBDII”, “obd-2″, OBDLink”, etc.
  5. Tap on it, to connect.
  6. Your phone would ask for PIN code. Type PIN code, that you received with adapter. Don’t get upset, if you don’t have PIN code! Most of Chineese clones uses one of theese PIN codes: 0000, 1234, 0987, 7890, 1111.  Just try them.
  7. If you have entered correct PIN, you would get label “connected” near adapter name.

Warning! Very often users are trying to connect to car bluetooth audio system. It’s a mistake. You can’t get diagnostic data through bluetooth audio. 

Second step –  Car Scanner Pro or Car Scanner settings.

  1. Check, that you have Bluetooth turned ON on your phone.
  2. Scroll Car Scanner Pro or Car Scanner main screen down, until you see tile “Settings” and tap on it. 
  3. You would see Connection settings.
  4. Choose “Connection type“: Bluetooth
  5. Choose your ELM327 adapter in Bluetooth devices list. 

Done! You have succesfully set connection via Bluetooth. Now use “back” key to get back to the main screen and tap on “Connect” tile.

You need to do this just for the very first time. For all other times, you need just to turn on Bluetooth before you tap on “Connect”.

Connecting to Wi-Fi ELM327 adapter.

Connection setup contains two steps: first of all you setup link between your smartphone and adapter in Windows settings, then you choose connection settings in Car Scanner Pro or Car Scanner settings.

First step – Windows settings.

  1. Plug in ELM327 adapter to your car diagnostic port and turn on ignition. If your adapter have ON/OFF switch, don’t forget ot turn it on.
  2. Open your phone “Settings“. Please, note, you need to use your phone (operating system) settings, not Car Scanner settings.
  3. Open Wi-Fi and turn on Wi-Fi on your phone.
  4. ELM327 adapter, working through Wi-Fi, creates it’s own Wi-Fi network (like a mini-router). Just wait until your phone finds is and connect to this network. Usually it has name “OBDII”, “obd-2”, etc.
  5. If your phone would ask for password, type password, that you’ve got with your Wi-Fi ELM327 adapter.
  6. When your phone would connect to network, created by ELM327, first step would be finished.

Second step –  Car Scanner Pro or Car Scanner settings.

  1. Check that you have Wi-Fi turned ON and your phone is connected to network, created by Wi-Fi ELM327 adapter.
  2. Scroll Car Scanner Pro or Car Scanner main screen down, until you see tile “Settings” and tap on it.
  3. You would see Connection settings.
  4. Choose “Connection type“: Wi-Fi
  5. Enter server address and port. You should get address and port with your Wi-Fi ELM327 adapter, but most of adapters have default  address 192.168.0.10 and port 35000. 

Done! You have succesfully set connection via Bluetooth. Now use “back” key to get back to the main screen and tap on “Connect” tile.

You need to do this just for the very first time. For all other times, you need just to turn on Wi-Fi and wait until your phone would be connected to ELM327 Wi-Fi network, before you tap on “Connect”.
